Where to find your monthly consumption: Check any previous bill. Subtract the "Previous Reading" from "Present Reading." The difference is your units consumed that month. If your bill shows "EST," the reading was estimated — use the actual meter reading for a more accurate calculation.

How Your Final Bill Is Calculated — Step by Step

Your final payable amount is never just the energy charge. Here is exactly how a typical domestic unprotected bill is calculated for 350 kWh:

Step 1 — Energy charges by slab:

  • First 100 kWh × Rs. 22.00 = Rs. 2,200
  • Next 100 kWh (101–200) × Rs. 27.00 = Rs. 2,700
  • Next 150 kWh (201–350) × Rs. 36.00 = Rs. 5,400
  • Total energy charge: Rs. 10,300

Step 2 — Fixed charges:

  • Single-phase meter rent: Rs. 75
  • Running total: Rs. 10,375

Step 3 — Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA):

  • 350 kWh × Rs. 1.63 (January 2026 rate) = Rs. 570.50
  • Running total: Rs. 10,945.50

Step 4 — FC Surcharge:

  • Approximately Rs. 3.23/kWh × 350 = Rs. 1,130.50
  • Running total: Rs. 12,076

Step 5 — GST at 18%:

  • 18% of Rs. 12,076 = Rs. 2,173.68
  • Running total: Rs. 14,249.68

Step 6 — Electricity Duty (1.5%):

  • 1.5% of energy charges only = Rs. 154.50
  • Running total: Rs. 14,404.18

Step 7 — NJ Surcharge + other levies:

  • Approximately Rs. 200–400 depending on category
  • Estimated final bill: Rs. 14,600 – 14,800

This is why a household consuming 350 kWh gets a bill of Rs. 14,000 to Rs. 15,000 when the energy charge alone was only Rs. 10,300. Taxes and surcharges are adding approximately 42% on top.


The 200 kWh Trap — Why Crossing This Number Costs You Thousands

This is the most important thing to understand about electricity billing in South Punjab.

The moment your consumption crosses 200 kWh in any billing month, you lose your protected consumer status for that entire cycle. Your bill does not jump only on the extra units — it jumps on every single unit from the first one.

Example:

  • 198 kWh consumed (protected): Energy charge ≈ Rs. 2,010
  • 202 kWh consumed (unprotected): Energy charge ≈ Rs. 5,450

A difference of just 4 kWh — roughly 4 hours of one ceiling fan and two LED bulbs — creates a Rs. 3,440 difference in your bill.

How to stay protected:

  • Check your meter in the last week of your billing cycle
  • If you are approaching 200 kWh, shift AC use to off-peak hours (11 PM to 7 AM)
  • Turn off geysers, irons, and washing machines during peak hours
  • Even one or two days of reduced usage can keep you under the limit

Why Your Calculated Amount Differs from the Actual Bill

The calculator gives a close estimate but your actual bill may differ slightly because:

FPA changes every month. The Fuel Price Adjustment is announced by NEPRA monthly and varies based on fuel costs in the power sector. This calculator uses the most recently announced FPA rate, but your bill applies the rate for your specific billing month.

Quarterly Tariff Adjustment (QTA). Every three months, NEPRA applies an additional adjustment for distribution margins and capacity costs. This can add Rs. 2 to Rs. 4 per kWh depending on the quarter.

Arrears. If you have any unpaid amount from previous months, it is added to the current bill. The calculator does not include arrears.

Estimated readings. If your meter was not physically read this month, the company issues an estimated reading. Your actual bill may be based on that estimate, not your real consumption.

Pro-rata billing. If your billing cycle is shorter or longer than 30 days due to reading schedule, your bill is adjusted proportionally.

How accurate is this calculator?
For domestic A-1 consumers, the estimate is within 3 to 5 percent of your actual bill in most cases. The main variable is FPA, which changes monthly. All energy charges, fixed charges, and GST are calculated using current NEPRA-approved rates.

Can I calculate my bill without knowing my exact units?
Yes — estimate based on appliance usage. A typical room AC (1.5 ton inverter) uses approximately 1.2 to 1.5 kWh per hour. Running it 8 hours per day for 30 days adds approximately 360 to 450 kWh to your monthly consumption.

Why does the calculator show a different amount than my actual bill?
The most common reasons are: FPA rate changed between when you calculated and when your bill was issued, you have arrears from a previous month, or your billing cycle has a QTA applied this quarter. The calculator is an estimate, not the official bill.

What is the minimum monthly bill for domestic consumers?
For a protected single-phase connection with zero consumption, the minimum charge is Rs. 75 (fixed meter rent). Even if you use no electricity at all, you will receive a bill for at least this amount.

MDI (Maximum Demand Indicator) applies to commercial and industrial connections — it measures the highest power demand in any 30-minute window during the month. Domestic connections do not have MDI charges.

How do I reduce my electricity bill?
The single most effective action: stay below 200 kWh per month. Below that threshold, your per-unit rate drops from Rs. 22 to as low as Rs. 5 on the first 50 kWh.
